On the Death of Leonard Cohen (no relation!)

How privileged I feel to have been able to live so much of my life to the soundtrack of Leonard Cohen's poetry and music.

His lyrics are often in my thoughts, and suddenly I've been thinking about "Democracy is coming to the USA." Right after the Trump election, those words sound more darkly amusing and comforting than before.

And because I have been thinking about all the hours I spent sitting on the floor next to my bed as a teenager, with my little record player cranked up and Leonard's soothingly dark words pouring forth, I've been thinking too about the fact that South Africa — an apartheid state throughout the years when I was growing up there — managed to elect a Black president before the USA did.

Democracy is still coming to a lot of the world. Leonard, though, has gone, and I am one of the millions mourning the loss of such a gently soulful human being. I'm also one of the many whose own language has felt the influence of his poetry.

Thank you, Leonard.

Sunday, April 10, 2016 — VIMAs Nomination

Cheryl's debut CD was up for a 2016 Vancouver Island Music Award: her producers, United Hipsters' Union (a.k.a. Aaron Bethune & Rick Salt), were finalists for the Producer of the Year category.

In a touch of synchronicity, the list of VIMA nominees was released on March 31 — the 40th anniversary of the day Cheryl left South Africa with a ticket for Luxembourg in 1976. The "exile" songs on Cheryl's album are linked to that decision. The album, Love & Exile, was released in 2015, recorded by Rick at Mountainview Studio in Nanaimo and produced by both Aaron and Rick.

The VIMA award winners were announced in Victoria on the weekend of April 9 and 10.

Tuesday, September 1, 2015 — Honouring Valdy

Cheryl was honoured to be able to sing a song she had written for the occasion ("Troubadour") at folk singer-songwriter icon Valdy's 70th birthday party — the kind of event that may help explain why he was gently tied to a deck chair at the time, in the nether reaches of the stage at Fulford Hall on Salt Spring Island, BC.
